I started riding when I was around nine-years-old. I competed in local speed shows until I was introduced to Cowboy Mounted Shooting (CMSA) two years later. I went to one CMSA event and was hooked. I only had two years in the Wrangler (kid) class before I had to move up into Ladies level 1. Now at 17, I’m a Ladies level 4 already on the way to level 5!
My horse, Star, started as a lesson horse before I started riding her in Cowboy Mounted Shooting. She’s 16 and has been a CMSA horse for 6 years, bringing me up the ranks from a Wrangler to a Ladies 4. She never ceases to amaze me!
I was never really given the option to ride without a helmet. It’s a habit now for me to grab a helmet before I step into the saddle and I’m glad that it’s starting to become a habit for more people. This past year I’ve seen more and more riders trade their hats for helmets at competitions and that makes me happy knowing that more people are that much safer when riding.
